Gallery 103

The Phillips Collection

Gallery 103 serves as the introductory space to The Phillips Collection, offering visitors their first encounter with this distinctive assembly of artworks. The gallery aims to equip visitors with tools to engage with the collection, which is curated to encourage relationships between pieces beyond historical or chronological contexts. Artworks are arranged thematically or formally; sometimes the connections are evident, while at other times they invite exploration and contemplation.

“Museum founder Duncan Phillips believed art played a crucial role in the “social purpose of the world.” As a meeting place of many minds, an art museum is where people can share their perspectives, explore their values, and learn about themselves. Duncan Phillips often emphasized the viewer’s experience over art history lessons and their emotional response over questions of chronology, geography, or style. He encouraged guests to look deeply to uncover what makes an artist worth knowing.”

Design Elements

Our design fosters interaction and conversation. Visitors have numerous opportunities to engage with the collection and reflect on their experience. At the entry wall, we installed a large interactive screen featuring a map of the museum. Throughout the gallery, prompts offer various ways to understand and access the art. A seating area encourages slower engagement and contemplation, while a desk invites visitors to draw connections between different pieces in the collection.

Interactive Features

In collaboration with The Phillips Collection team, we developed multiple modes of interaction to enhance visitor engagement. The centerpiece is a large touchscreen providing information about the artworks on display and their locations. Additional displays invite visitors to touch, explore, discuss, and inquire about the collection and their visit.
